The Synthesis of Faith and Reason #1922

The Synthesis of Faith and Reason In halls where ancient wisdom spoke, A new light dawned, as truth awoke. Aristotle's words took flight, In Aquinas' mind, a guiding light. From senses' touch and reason's gaze, Aquinas wove a hymn of praise. No knowledge born from shadows cast, But from the world, in truth, amassed. He saw in nature's vast expanse, God's hand at work, a sacred dance. The stars, the trees, the rivers' flow, In them, the face of God did show. No chasm deep 'tween faith and thought, For both, by God, were finely wrought. He bridged the gap with logic's thread, In holy wisdom, boldly led. Platonic realms of forms ideal, Gave way to truths that senses feel. No shadows on the cavern wall, But light that shines, embracing all. From Aristotle's ancient shore, To Christian lands, where spirits soar, Aquinas brought a synthesis, Of reason's path and faith's pure kiss. He spoke of virtues, both profound, In earthly deeds, and grace abound. From prudence, justice, courage, too, To faith, and hope, and love's sweet hue. The Five Ways pointed to the sky, With reason's wings, they learned to fly. From motion, cause, and being's core, To order, ends, and something more. So let this tale of wisdom blend, Of faith and reason, without end. For in the union, truth we find, Aquinas' gift to humankind. -Steven G. Lee (June 24, 2024)
