Necessary Training in Christianity: A Journey Through Compassion #2084

Necessary Training in Christianity: A Journey Through Compassion In the woven tapestry of sacred texts, we find the heart of our calling, a path illuminated by compassion and care. When your brother stumbles, when poverty’s relentless grip takes hold, do not turn away. Leviticus whispers to us, "If your brother becomes poor and cannot maintain himself with you, you shall support him as though he were a stranger and a sojourner, and he shall live with you." Here lies the essence of our faith—a command to lift, to uphold, to embrace those in need as our own. The ancient city of Sodom stands as a stark reminder, a mirror to our own hearts. Ezekiel’s voice echoes through time, "Behold, this was the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had pride, excess of food, and prosperous ease, but did not aid the poor and needy." In their comfort and abundance, they forgot the call to love, to reach out to the marginalized. Their story warns us against the perils of indifference, urging us to let go of pride and extend our hands in service. The Gospel of Matthew reveals the depth of our calling, painting a vivid picture of divine encounter. "I was hungry and you gave Me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave Me something to drink, I was a stranger and you took Me in, I was naked and you clothed Me, I was sick and you looked after Me, I was in prison and you visited Me." Each act of kindness, each gesture of love, becomes a sacred meeting with Christ Himself. In every face of the needy, we see His image, calling us to act with boundless compassion. Necessary training in Christianity is not found in lofty words or grand gestures but in the simple, profound acts of love. It is in feeding the hungry, offering water to the thirsty, welcoming the stranger, clothing the naked, caring for the sick, and visiting the imprisoned. This is where the gospel breathes, where faith takes on flesh and dwells among us. Let us be those who hear the ancient whispers and heed their call. Let us be those who look upon the suffering and respond with open hearts. In the quiet, everyday moments of service, we find the true measure of our faith. For in lifting others, we lift ourselves; in loving others, we love Christ; and in serving the least, we serve the King. This is our training ground, our necessary journey. It is a path marked by humility, guided by mercy, and anchored in love. Let us walk it faithfully, ever mindful of the sacred duty to which we are called. -Steven G. Lee (June 30, 2024)
