Resource Allocation in 21st-Century Capitalism #1705

Resource Allocation in 21st-Century Capitalism In the dance of markets, prices rise and fall, Demand and supply, the echo of the call. Private hands control, in competition's race, Seeking profit margins, driving at a pace. Government steps in, with rules to align, Correcting market failures, drawing a fine line. Subsidies and taxes, a balancing act, Public goods provided, where markets lack. Global chains entwine, resources trade afar, Nations interwoven, under trade's bright star. Tariffs, quotas, agreements in the mix, Shaping flows of commerce, a complex fix. Yet shadows cast upon this gleaming spree, Inequality grows, the rich sail free. Wealth's towering peaks, poverty's deep well, Disparities widen, stories hard to tell. The earth bears the weight of unchecked greed, Forests fall, oceans cry, in desperate need. Pollution's dark cloak, wraps tight and mean, A warming world, once lush and green. Monopolies rise, stifling the small, In innovation's shadow, they cast a pall. Externalities loom, costs not paid, Governments step in, their hands often stayed. Economic cycles, a pendulum's swing, Boom and bust, the turmoil they bring. Financial crises, a lurking beast, Jobs lost, homes gone, stability ceased. Workers' plight in gig and grind, Job security hard to find. Wages stagnate, despite the toil, Laborers' dreams, in profit's foil. Healthcare's chasm, wide and deep, Costs that climb, promises we keep. Access denied, for many a gate, In a system where wealth dictates fate. So in this 21st-century tale we weave, Challenges abound, for which we grieve. Yet hope remains, in hearts that strive, For a world where all can truly thrive. -Steven G. Lee (June 13, 2024)
