A Synthesis of Wisdom: Aquinas and the Philosophers #1920

A Synthesis of Wisdom: Aquinas and the Philosophers In medieval halls where thoughts entwined, Thomas Aquinas, a sage refined, Took Aristotle’s empirical way, And merged it with the Christian sway. Aristotle’s wisdom, sensory and bright, Declared knowledge not innate, but from sight, Through senses raw, the mind perceives, And logic’s hand our truth retrieves. Aquinas saw these gifts, divine, From God’s own hand, in nature’s sign, Our reason, too, a holy tool, To understand both world and rule. Before Aquinas, Plato reigned, With ideals and forms, the mind was trained, Augustine’s soul, in abstract thought, Eternal realms and truths he sought. Socrates, with questions deep, In Christian hearts his wisdom seeped, To seek the truth, oneself to know, In humility, the soul to grow. But Thomas, with a vision clear, Brought Aristotle’s knowledge near, Empirical and faith combined, In harmony, both realms aligned. No longer just the abstract way, But senses and reason held their sway, A synthesis of earth and skies, In Aquinas’ work, this wisdom lies. From sensory touch to divine embrace, Aquinas bridged the sacred space, Laid foundations, strong and bright, For Western thought and Christian light. Thus in the blend of sight and soul, Aquinas played his crucial role, In wisdom’s dance, both old and new, He forged a path, profound and true. -Steven G. Lee (June 24, 2024)
