Voices Unsilenced: A Prose Poem for Linguistic Justice #1116
Voices Unsilenced: A Prose Poem for Linguistic Justice
(Harmony of Voices: A Poem for Linguistic Justice)
In the vast mosaic of America, where whispers of history linger in the wind,
English stands tall—dominant, imposing.
Yet beneath its towering presence,
the silenced voices of indigenous tongues,
the vibrant cadences of African American Vernacular,
the lyrical flows of Spanish,
each murmurs a tale of neglect.
School halls echo with the laughter of children,
but the non-native whisperers face barriers invisible—
curricula that do not mirror their heritage,
tests that do not know their voice,
a system that teaches them to value others’ words over their own.
In the workplaces, biases are cloaked in politeness—
preference for the familiar accent,
the mainstream fluency,
leaving others to toil in the shadows of opportunity,
their worth weighed by the scale of their dialect.
Laws and debates swirl around us,
a storm of words about which language holds the key
to an imagined gate of unity—
proposing English as the sole bearer of identity,
erasing the rich tapestry of linguistic diversity.
We stand at the crossroads,
where the path of change calls for courage—
to advocate for schools that embrace bilingual breaths,
for laws that safeguard the rhythms of all speech,
for workplaces that judge not by the tongue’s twist but by the mind’s spark.
Let us weave a new narrative,
where every language is a thread vital in the fabric of our nation,
where every voice is heard, every dialect dignified,
a nation that truly embodies its creed—
e pluribus unum, out of many, one.
For in the chorus of diverse voices,
in the symphony of spoken heritage,
lies the strength of our shared future—
a future vibrant, inclusive, just.
A poetic testament to the America that can be,
if only we listen.
