In Reverence and Harmony: A Reflection on Church Music #896

In Reverence and Harmony: A Reflection on Church Music Let us gather, brothers and sisters, beneath the spire that pierces the heavens, where voices meld into a sacred chorus and the Word unfolds like dawn's first light. Here, in this consecrated space, where John Calvin's whispers mingle with John Knox's stern gaze, let us contemplate the essence of our song. Our purpose, a solemn echo of divine intent— to glorify, to meditate, to embrace the hallowed script etched in ancient scrolls. Music, our humble servant, not master, cradles the Word, lifting it high without veiling its truth in ostentatious garb. Let simplicity be our refrain: Notes pure and clear as mountain springs, melodies that bind, not divide, the congregation in shared devotion. For in simplicity, we find the profound, the heart's voice louder than any crescendo. Beware the spectacle, the siren's call that turns worship to theatre, emotion its currency, distraction its trade. Instead, let us seek the sacred silence between chords, the holy pause where souls draw breath and the spirit whispers. Adherence to Scripture, our compass and keel— Let every hymn, every choral response be steeped in the waters of biblical truth. Songs like stones, building a fortress of faith, protecting the purity of our praise. Musicians, custodians of this sacred exchange, shoulders bearing not just notes but the weight of legacy—guide us not into performance but into presence, where every strum, every chord is a prayer, every silence a confession. Let us teach, let us learn— the why of our worship as important as the how, dialogues of devotion that deepen our understanding, that stitch us closer in the fabric of community. And let us listen—truly listen—to the heartbeat of our assembly, reflecting, refining, returning always to the roots of our faith where John Calvin's whispers and John Knox's stern gaze urge us to purity, to the divine simplicity of a worshipful life. Thus, we commit to this symphony of sincerity, where God’s voice is the highest note, and our music but a humble accompaniment. Here, in reverence and harmony, let our spirits soar, bound yet boundless within the framework of His holy word. In Christ’s enduring love and service, Pastor Steven G. Lee (April 13, 2024)
