Faith's Dual Path: The Reformation's Legacy and Today's Quest #859

Faith's Dual Path: The Reformation's Legacy and Today's Quest In ages past, when faith was vast, two reformers cast, Their visions wide, with God as guide, through time's vast expanse. Luther rose, in German prose, against the Church's throes, Ninety-five theses, on church's breezes, a challenge bold he chose. Justification by faith alone, a truth he'd deeply known, Scripture's authority, against majority, a seed of change was sown. The priesthood of each believer, not just the church's receiver, In the Holy Roman land, with a firm stand, he was the great achiever. But in Geneva's walls, another voice calls, John Calvin, with precision, on a divine mission, his doctrine enthralls. Predestination's mystery, in God's history, he clearly espouses, Sovereign in salvation, a firm foundation, in Geneva's houses. Calvin's governance, of moral nuance, a model of reform, Where church and state, in a single fate, could weather any storm. A city-state, so articulate, in ecclesiastic norm, His influence vast, through ages cast, a guiding light so warm. Yet differences lie, beneath the sky, between these men of faith, Luther's focus, so hopeful to us, on individual's grace. Calvin's wide lens, on societal trends, a comprehensive embrace, Their paths diverged, yet together surged, in history's endless chase. Political ties, under different skies, each movement's unique course, German princes’ aid, Luther's crusade, with a nationalist force. Calvin's grassroots, with Geneva's roots, a civic-religious source, Both paths they tread, by faith were led, with divine endorsement. Today we stand, with heart and hand, seeking reform anew, Inclusivity's call, for one and all, a vision broad and true. Social justice's plea, for the oppressed, free, in everything we do, Technology's reach, to teach and preach, a community to renew. Environmental care, a world to repair, in stewardship we engage, For creation's groan, is deeply known, as we turn the page. The essence of reform, in every form, from age to age, A return to belief, for relief, in this contemporary stage. Thus, Luther and Calvin, with doctrines carved in, Laid paths that we now tread, Their differences and similitudes, in multitudes, Guide us where we're led. In faith, hope, and love, from above, our hearts and souls are fed, As we seek to reform, in this era's norm, by their examples spread. Written by Steven G. Lee (April 10, 2024)
