Every institution is ultimately measured by its first virtue.
A system of thought stands or falls by its commitment to truth. Without truth, knowledge becomes ideology, reason becomes manipulation, and intelligence becomes a tool for power rather than wisdom. Truth is the compass that gives direction to every honest search for understanding.
In the same way, a religious institution is measured not first by the size of its buildings, the beauty of its worship, the precision of its doctrines, or the influence of its traditions. Its first virtue is revealed by how faithfully it loves the neighbor. For the neighbor is where faith leaves the realm of ideas and enters the reality of life.
God's will is rarely discovered in isolation. It is uncovered in the ordinary encounters where compassion is required, forgiveness becomes costly, justice demands courage, and mercy overcomes convenience. The neighbor is not an interruption to the spiritual journey; the neighbor is the path itself.
Throughout Scripture, love of God and love of neighbor are inseparable. To seek God while neglecting the neighbor is to search for a destination while refusing to follow the map. The will of God is not hidden behind secret knowledge or reserved for the spiritually exceptional. It is continually revealed wherever human dignity is honored, burdens are shared, strangers are welcomed, and the vulnerable are loved.
Every generation therefore faces the same question. Does its religion merely preserve beliefs, or does it cultivate mercy? Does it defend institutions, or does it serve people? For a faith that loses sight of the neighbor has lost sight of the very road it claims to travel.
The neighbor is the map of God's will because love is the first language of heaven. As truth gives life to every genuine system of thought, so mercy gives life to every genuine expression of faith. Wherever these two are faithfully honored, humanity moves closer to both wisdom and God.
