THE ENGINE AND THE BRAKE

THE ENGINE AND THE BRAKE

An engine sings of distant roads,
Of mountains waiting to be crossed,
Of horizons calling every wheel
To move beyond the place it knows.

But every journey carries a question:
Who will teach power when to stop?

The finest automobile
Is not praised for speed alone.
It earns our trust
Because hidden beneath its motion
Lives the quiet wisdom of restraint.

Without an engine,
It becomes only metal and memory.

Without brakes,
It becomes fear in motion.

No child would sleep in its back seat.
No parent would take the wheel.
No traveler would entrust
Tomorrow to its path.

So it is with every nation.

Authority is the engine.
Law is the brake.
Conscience is the road.
Justice is the destination.

A republic does not become great
By racing toward every conflict.
Its greatness is revealed
When power listens
To the voice that says,
"Pause."

For history remembers
Not only those who marched into war,
But those who possessed the courage
To prevent it.

The strongest democracy
Is not the one that never moves,
Nor the one that never stops.

It is the one
Whose power is governed by wisdom,
Whose strength is guided by mercy,
And whose freedom travels safely
Because restraint rides beside it.

Only then
Does the journey honor
Every life within the vehicle,
And every generation
Waiting for the road ahead.
