THE NEIGHBOR AS THE FINAL TEST AT PROXIMITY

THE NEIGHBOR AS THE FINAL TEST AT PROXIMITY

Not far away
beyond oceans, theories,
or the safety of speeches—
the final test waits near.

It stands beneath freeway shadows,
sits beside shopping carts,
sleeps against concrete walls
where the city lowers its eyes.

The Kingdom comes close enough
to smell the rain on worn blankets,
close enough to hear
the trembling in another man’s silence.

Many wish for distant missions
while stepping over the wounded nearby.
Many search the heavens for signs
while ignoring the living parable beside the road.

But the Cross does not float above history
like an ornament untouched by pain.
It descends.
It kneels.
It bleeds beside the abandoned.

Christ is not hidden
behind the gates of power.
He waits in proximity—
in the unbearable nearness of human need.

The neighbor becomes the mirror.
The poor become the question.
The outcast becomes the courtroom
where every theology is examined.

For mercy is not proven
by what we declare from afar,
but by whether love survives
when suffering stands directly before us.

The priest passed by.
The empire passed by.
The experts passed by.
But mercy crossed the road.

And Heaven still leans downward
toward every forgotten corner,
asking the same eternal question:

When love came near,
did you draw near also?
